Safety Tips
Stay Safe While Buying and Selling on Bayosell
Your safety is our priority.
Bayosell is designed to connect buyers and sellers across Ghana, but every transaction is ultimately between the individuals involved. By following a few simple precautions, you can enjoy a safer and more successful buying and selling experience.
Whether you’re purchasing a phone, selling a vehicle, renting a property, or offering a service, taking sensible precautions can help protect you from fraud and ensure a smooth transaction.
Meeting Buyers and Sellers
Whenever possible, arrange to meet in a safe, public location.
Busy public places such as shopping centres, police-approved meeting points, banks, restaurants, or other well-populated areas are usually the safest places to complete a transaction.
Avoid meeting in isolated locations or inviting strangers to your home unless absolutely necessary.
If you’re selling large items that require collection from your property, consider having a family member or trusted friend present during the visit.
Inspect Items Before Payment
Never rush into making a payment.
Before handing over money, carefully inspect the item to ensure it matches the description and photographs provided in the advert.
For electronics:
- Test the device.
- Check all functions.
- Verify accessories.
- Confirm serial numbers where appropriate.
For vehicles:
- Inspect the condition thoroughly.
- Request service history if available.
- Verify ownership documents.
- Consider arranging an independent mechanical inspection.
For property:
- Visit the property in person.
- Verify ownership or agency details.
- Read any agreements carefully before signing.
Avoid Advance Payments
One of the most common online scams involves requesting payment before an item has been inspected.
Bayosell strongly recommends that buyers do not send deposits or full payments to unknown sellers before seeing the item.
Be especially cautious if someone:
- Requests urgent payment.
- Claims to be overseas.
- Refuses to meet in person.
- Offers prices that seem too good to be true.
Legitimate sellers are usually willing to answer questions and arrange reasonable viewing opportunities.
Protect Your Personal Information
Never share confidential information with another user.
Do not disclose:
- Online banking passwords
- Mobile money PINs
- Debit or credit card PINs
- One-Time Passwords (OTP)
- Internet banking verification codes
- Personal identification numbers unless legally required
Bayosell will never ask you for your passwords or financial PINs.
Be Careful with Mobile Money and Bank Transfers
If using Mobile Money or bank transfer, always verify the identity of the other party before sending funds.
Double-check account details and confirm that the person you are dealing with is genuine.
If you’re unsure, arrange to complete the transaction in person after inspecting the item.
Watch for Unrealistic Prices
If an advert appears significantly cheaper than similar listings, take extra care.
Scammers often use unusually low prices to attract attention and pressure buyers into making quick decisions.
Always compare prices with similar items listed on Bayosell before proceeding.
If something appears too good to be true, it probably is.
Communicate Clearly
Ask questions before arranging a meeting.
Useful questions include:
- Is the item still available?
- Has it been repaired?
- Are there any faults?
- Is the price negotiable?
- Why are you selling it?
Clear communication helps avoid misunderstandings and saves time for both parties.
Selling Safely
If you’re selling an item:
- Describe it honestly.
- Upload clear, recent photographs.
- Meet buyers in safe locations whenever possible.
- Confirm payment before handing over the item.
- Keep copies of important documents relating to high-value transactions.
Never allow a buyer to pressure you into changing agreed payment methods or rushing the sale.
Vehicle Transactions
When buying or selling vehicles:
- Verify registration documents.
- Confirm ownership.
- Check the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) where applicable.
- Complete ownership transfer according to Ghanaian regulations.
If possible, meet during daylight hours and inspect the vehicle carefully.
Property Transactions
When renting or buying property:
- Visit the property before making any payment.
- Verify ownership or the agent’s authority.
- Read contracts carefully.
- Keep copies of all agreements and receipts.
Never make large payments without confirming the legitimacy of the transaction.
